Non-destructive testing (NDT)

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a critical process in industry, used to ensure safety, quality control and asset management (i.e. accident prevention). NDT techniques range from simple visual inspection and magnetic particle inspection to advanced technologies like ultrasonic testing, radiography, and eddy current testing.

Each solution has features that make it more or less suitable for determined sectors and applications. Due to the vast variety of materials and applications in the NDT market, no single NDT method can find all defects in all cases. Applying several technologies to an entire, complex industrial asset is not cost effective.

The biggest challenge for the NDT market is to provide high quality inspection in the shortest possible time. High quality inspection in less time allows NDT technicians to have better data and more time to evaluate the results and make critical decisions on the condition of the asset, which reduces the probability of a catastrophic accident occurring.

Project SECURE

SECURE is a breakthrough solution for Non-Destructive Testing that is able to detect defects in both surface and subsurface inspection, and over coating or insulation, on all conductive materials.

SECURE is the first NDT solution that can work in a truly wide range of sectors and applications. Our proprietary method, based on advanced electromagnetic induction technology, offers unprecedented sensitivity for in-depth flaw detection with a quick scan, is affordable and easy to use.

The portable device is equipped with three specialized probes and offers a 3-in-1 solution for some of the most critical NDT challenges faced by modern industry:

a) Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) Inspection

One of the most significant issues in the Oil & Gas sector, typically addressed with limited success by existing techniques that involve high equipment costs, considerable asset downtime, and numerous constraints. The SECURE system can inspect through 4mm aluminum cladding and 40mm of insulation, detecting wall thickness reduction of up to 10%, depending on insulation thickness. With a scanning speed of 30mm/s and no need to remove or alter the insulation, it revolutionizes the way CUI inspections are performed.

b) Inspection of Multilayer Conductive Materials at Depth

A critical application in the Aerospace industry, where multilayer structures and complex geometries often preclude the use of Ultrasonics and necessitate complete disassembly, while Radiography causes safety and cost concerns. The SECURE system provides a penetration depth of up to 20mm in non-ferromagnetic materials, regardless of the number of layers, allowing inspection without dismantling the component.

c) Weld Inspection

The most widespread NDT application in industry, where the choice of method is influenced by geometry, material grain structure, and possible surface coatings. A notable case is the detection of tungsten inclusions in non-ferromagnetic stainless steel welds, where the SECURE system can detect inclusions as small as 1mm in diameter at depths exceeding 4mm.

Naturally, SECURE is not limited to applications in Oil & Gas and Aerospace but is also suitable for use in power generation/renewables, defense industry, maritime, desalination plants, and broadly across the infrastructure and construction sectors.
